Pipe Fittings Guide: Elbow, Tee, Reducer and Pipe Cap Explained

Elbows, tees, reducers and caps decide how a pipeline turns, branches, changes size and ends. These small components carry the same design pressure as the pipe, and a mismatched fitting is a classic source of turbulence, erosion and premature failure. Here is how to specify butt-weld pipe fittings correctly.

The Four Workhorse Fittings
Elbow 45° / 90° / 180° — changes direction; long radius (LR, R=1.5D) is the default, short radius (SR, R=1D) saves space at a pressure-drop penalty
Tee and cross — equal tee keeps branch size, reducing tee steps down; used for branch take-offs and headers
Reducer — concentric for vertical lines and pumps, eccentric for horizontal lines to avoid vapour pockets
Pipe cap — welded permanent end closure, commonly hemispherical or elliptical
Manufacturing Route
Zhantong forms fittings from seamless pipe or plate by hot pushing, hot forming or forging, followed by heat treatment (normalising, quenching and tempering for alloy grades), machining of bevels to ASME B16.25, and final dimensional inspection. Seamless elbows offer uniform wall thickness; welded elbows are more economical in large diameters.
Standards and Wall Thickness
ASME B16.9 factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings (the global default)
ASME B16.28 wrought short-radius elbows
MSS SP-43, DIN 2605 / 2615 / 2616 / 2617, JIS B2311, GOST 17375
Schedule range: SCH10, SCH20, SCH30, STD, SCH40, SCH60, XS, SCH80, SCH100, SCH120, SCH140, SCH160, XXS
Material: A234 WPB carbon steel, A420 WPL6 low temperature, A234 WP5/WP11/WP91 alloy, 304/316L stainless
Mechanical Property Benchmarks
Typical acceptance values for carbon steel fittings supplied by Zhantong: tensile strength ≥ 330 MPa, elongation ≥ 8%, hardness ≤ HB150. Hydrostatic testing, dye penetrant or magnetic particle inspection and ultrasonic wall-thickness checks are available per order.
Applications
Oil, gas and petrochemical process piping
Power plant steam, feedwater and ash/slurry handling
Municipal water supply, drainage and sewage
Shipbuilding, marine engineering and offshore modules
HVAC, fire protection and industrial utility networks
Frequently Asked Questions
Equal tee or reducing tee?
Use an equal tee when the branch is the same size as the run. A reducing tee is specified as run × run × branch, so a 200×200×100 tee has a 200 mm run and a 100 mm branch.
Concentric or eccentric reducer?
Concentric for vertical lines and pump suction where symmetry is needed; eccentric (flat side up or down as required) for horizontal lines to prevent gas or sediment pockets.
LR or SR elbow?
Long radius by default — lower pressure drop and less erosion. Short radius only where space is genuinely constrained.
Conclusion
Fittings are specified by standard, type, size, schedule and material — five items that must all appear on the purchase order. Zhantong manufactures elbows, tees, crosses, reducers and caps in carbon, alloy and stainless steel to ASME, DIN, JIS and GOST requirements. Send your isometric or BOM for a matched quotation.
