API 5L Line Pipe: Grades, PSL Levels and Selection for Oil & Gas

Cross-country oil and gas transmission leaves no room for ambiguity: the pipe must meet API 5L, hold pressure for decades, and survive soil, product chemistry and third-party inspection. This guide explains the grades, manufacturing routes and documentation behind a compliant line pipe order.

API 5L Grades and What They Mean
Grade B to X80: the number after X is the specified minimum yield strength in ksi (X42 = 42,000 psi ≈ 290 MPa; X80 ≈ 555 MPa)
Higher grades allow higher operating pressure or thinner wall for the same duty, reducing steel tonnage
Two product specification levels: PSL1 standard quality, PSL2 with tighter chemistry, mandatory CVN impact testing and full NDT
Sour service grades with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance and HIC/SSC testing
Manufacturing Routes
| Type | Process | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| SMLS (seamless) | Billet piercing and rolling | High pressure, small-to-medium diameter, sour and critical service |
| ERW / HFW | Coil formed and electric welded | Gathering, distribution and water lines, cost-efficient |
| LSAW / DSAW | Plate formed and longitudinally submerged arc welded | Large-diameter, thick-wall trunklines |
| SSAW / SAWH | Coil spiral welded | Large-diameter oil, gas, water and piling with economical sizing |
Dimensions and Tolerances
Outside diameter roughly 50–2500 mm across product families
Wall thickness commonly 4–60 mm depending on diameter and grade
Standard lengths 6 m, 9 m and 12 m, or cut-to-length and double-joint options
End finish: plain, bevelled to ASME B16.25, or with coupling and thread for certain standards
Companion standard: GB/T 9711 and ISO 3183 for international projects
Testing and Documentation
A compliant order carries chemical analysis, tensile and Charpy impact results, hydrostatic test records, non-destructive testing of the weld seam (UT, RT or eddy current depending on the route), dimensional reports and an API/ISO certificate with full heat and pipe traceability. Zhantong supports SGS, BV, TUV and client-appointed third-party witness inspection.
Applications
Onshore and offshore oil and gas transmission trunklines
Natural gas distribution, city gate stations and gathering networks
Slurry, water and product pipelines
Piping for refineries, petrochemical plants and terminals
Structural piling, casing and conductor pipe
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, seamless or welded line pipe?
Both are code-compliant. Seamless is preferred for small diameters, high pressure, sour and critical service; LSAW/SSAW dominate large-diameter trunklines for cost reasons.
What does PSL2 add?
Tighter chemical limits, mandatory impact testing, stricter toughness and NDT requirements, and full traceability — usually required for offshore, sour and high-consequence areas.
Can line pipe be supplied pre-coated?
Yes. Most transmission lines are ordered with 3PE, 3PP or FBE coating applied before delivery, with holiday testing and cut-back for field welding.
Conclusion
Line pipe specification is where pipeline safety begins. Zhantong supplies API 5L seamless and welded line pipe to ISO 3183 and GB/T 9711 with optional 3PE/FBE coating and complete certification. Send grade, size, PSL level and route conditions for a detailed quotation.
