Threaded Pipe Fittings: Standards and Installation Guide

Threaded fittings join pipe without welding, using machined threads that screw together to form a connection. They shine in small-bore lines, instrument connections, and low-pressure utility systems where welding would be slow or impractical. Getting the most from them requires understanding thread standards, sealing methods, and the pressure limits that keep threaded joints reliable rather than leak-prone.
Thread Standards: NPT and BSP
Two thread families dominate. The National Pipe Taper (NPT) thread, common in North America, tapers along its length so the threads wedge together and seal as they tighten. The British Standard Pipe (BSP) thread appears widely elsewhere and comes in tapered and parallel versions. NPT and BSP threads are not interchangeable, and mixing them produces a joint that will not seal properly, so matching the thread standard across a connection is essential.
Reading the fitting markings and specifications confirms the thread type before assembly, preventing the frustration of mismatched threads discovered during tightening.
How Threaded Joints Seal
A tapered thread seals through metal-to-metal contact as the threads jam together, but a sealant is nearly always added to fill the tiny helical gap and prevent leakage. Thread sealant tape or a liquid pipe dope, applied correctly, provides that final seal and also lubricates the threads for proper makeup. Too little sealant risks a leak; too much can extrude into the line and contaminate the fluid.
Correct makeup tightens the joint by hand, then applies a specified number of additional turns with a wrench so the threads engage fully without over-stressing the fitting or splitting a fitting body.
Common Threaded Fitting Types
Threaded fittings cover the same family of shapes as welded fittings: elbows, tees, couplings, unions, caps, plugs, and reducing bushings. Couplings join two lengths of pipe, unions allow disassembly without rotating the pipe, and bushings adapt one thread size to another. Pipe nipples, short threaded pipe pieces, connect fittings in tight spaces. Together they let a fabricator assemble a complete small-bore system by hand.
Forged fittings for higher pressure classes follow ASME B16.11, offering robust threaded connections rated well above the light-duty fittings used for plumbing and drainage.
Pressure and Size Limits
Threaded connections suit small pipe sizes, generally up to about two inches, and low to moderate pressure. Threading removes metal from the pipe wall, creating a stress point, so large or high-pressure lines favor welded joints instead. Vibration and thermal cycling can also loosen threaded joints over time, which is why critical or dynamic service usually specifies welding.
Within their proper range, though, threaded fittings deliver quick, reliable connections that are easy to modify or repair, a genuine advantage in instrument tubing, utility air, and similar systems.
Materials and Selection
Forged threaded fittings are made in carbon steel under ASTM A105, alloy steel under A182, and stainless grades also covered by A182. Material selection follows the fluid and environment, with stainless chosen for corrosive service and carbon steel for general duty. Matching the fitting material to the connected pipe avoids galvanic corrosion at the joint.

Best Practices for Leak-Free Joints

Maintenance and Disassembly
One quiet advantage of threaded systems is how easily they come apart for repair or modification. Where a union is installed, a section can be broken and remade without cutting or rotating the surrounding pipe, a real benefit in instrument racks and utility lines that change over time. During reassembly, old sealant is cleaned from the threads and fresh sealant applied, since reusing dried compound invites leaks.
Threads should be inspected each time a joint is opened. Damaged, galled, or corroded threads will not seal reliably and are best replaced rather than forced back into service. Stainless steel fittings in particular can gall during makeup if not lubricated properly, so an anti-seize compound suited to the service helps them assemble and later disassemble cleanly. Treating threaded joints with this modest care keeps them serviceable for many cycles, extending the value of fittings sourced from a quality manufacturer with consistent thread machining and traceable material.
