Why Q345B Is a Workhorse Grade

Q345B offers a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa with good toughness at ambient temperature and excellent weldability. Its low alloy content keeps cost down while outperforming plain carbon Q235 in load-bearing roles.

Because it is produced seamless, the pipe avoids weld-line defects and is suitable for both structural columns and low-to-moderate pressure conveyance.

Manufacturing and Heat Treatment

Q345B seamless pipe is typically hot-rolled from a pierced billet and supplied in the as-rolled or normalized condition. Normalizing improves grain uniformity and impact toughness for critical structures.

Zhantong controls chemistry, wall thickness and ovality to GB/T 8163 and GB/T 17395, and can provide ultrasonic or eddy-current testing on request.

Standards and Grade Equivalents

In China the grade is covered by GB/T 1591 (structural) and GB/T 8163 (seamless pipe for fluid service). Near-equivalents include S355JR (EN 10025) and ASTM A572 Gr.50 in structural contexts.

Buyers exporting to Europe or North America often request dual certification so the same pipe satisfies both GB and EN/ASTM documentation.

Performance in Field Service

Q345B seamless pipe performs well from -20 °C upward and resists brittle fracture under dynamic load. Its yield-to-tensile ratio gives predictable deformation before failure, an important safety feature in structures.

For colder climates, the lower-temperature Q345C or Q345D grades with impact-tested charpy values are recommended.

Common Application Scenarios

Use cases include building and bridge columns, support trusses, conveyor structures, piling, and process piping for water, air and non-aggressive fluids. It is also a base material for fabricated pressure parts.

In mining and material handling, Q345B frames absorb shock loads that would fatigue thinner carbon pipe.

How to Specify Q345B Seamless Pipe

State outer diameter, wall thickness (SCH or mm), length, heat-treatment state, inspection level and end finish. For structures, reference GB/T 1591; for fluid service, GB/T 8163.

Confirm weld procedure qualification if the pipe will be welded into a load path, and request mill test reports with charpy and tensile results.
